Bomb blast: Minister’s breast ripped off

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Environment, Climate and Water, Ms Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, has lost one of her breasts after the explosion that rocked the campaign rally of President Emmerson Mnangagwa last Saturday.

Muchinguri-Kashiri, who is also the National Chairperson of the ruling Zanu-PF, has been airlifted to South Africa for reconstruction surgery.

The Environment, Climate and Water minister was among 49 people injured at the rally.

She was first rushed to the Catholic-run Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo and then evacuated to Manyame Airbase Hospital along with other VIPs who sustained injuries during the explosion, in which Mnangagwa was lucky to escape unhurt.

The Daily News reports that the 59-year-old top Zanu PF official actually got one of her breasts ripped off.

“It’s actually the breast not chest,” a senior authoritative establishment official told the Daily News, while revealing she was airlifted to South Africa on Wednesday.

“It’ s not a small matter. Mai Muchinguri is in shock and in bad shape.”

David Parirenyatwa, the Health and Child Care minister, confirmed yesterday that she sustained injuries to her breast.”

In Iraq, Interior minister resigns after massive Baghdad bomb attack

Iraq’s interior minister resigned on Tuesday and said a deputy would take over his responsibilities, a few days after the deadliest of many car bombings in Baghdad since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Mohammed Ghabban made the announcement at a news conference in Baghdad, a video of which was posted on his Facebook page. His resignation will be official only if Prime Minister

Haider Al Abadi approves it. Abadi’s office had no immediate comment.

The death toll from a massive suicide bombing in Baghdad’s central shopping district of Karrada on Saturday has reached 250, Iraq’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

It was the worst single car bomb attack in Iraq since U.S. forces toppled

Saddam Hussein 13 years ago and deepened the anger of many Iraqis over the weak performance of the security apparatus.

Islamic State militants, who government forces are trying to eject from large swathes of northern and western territory seized in 2014, claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The attack showed Islamic State (IS) remains capable of ad-hoc attacks causing major loss of life despite losing considerable ground on the battlefield, most recently the city of Falluja, an hour’s drive west of the capital.

The interior minister said that the explosive-packed vehicle came from the eastern province of Diyala, blaming a lack of communicating between multiple forces in charge of the capital’s security.

Ghabban told Reuters in an interview last month that a recent spate of IS bombings in Baghdad would not end unless “disorder” plaguing Iraq’s security apparatus was rectified.

He said then that security forces outside his control – including units reporting to two counter-terrorism agencies, two Defence Ministry directorates and regional security commands – overlap with his ministry’s own counter-intelligence efforts.

Isuku said “A team of the Police Explosives Ordinance Department, EOD, has been deployed to the scene this morning near Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, depot.
“The people in the mosque took to their heels, while we challenged the explosives strapped suspects of their mission to the mosque, before these explosive exploded near the mosque and under this tree.

In Lebanon Minister confirms bomb blast in central Beirut aimed at bank

image

Local television showed footage of a damaged building, with one hole in a concrete wall, and said shattered glass had fallen to the ground from several storeys up.

A bomb exploded outside the headquarters of Lebanese Blom Bank in central Beirut on Sunday, causing damage but no fatalities, the interior minister said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
The Lebanese banking sector has been at the centre of an escalating crisis since the United States passed a law requiring banks to take steps to target the finances of the armed Shi’ite political group Hezbollah.

image

Lebanon’s central bank has pushed its commercial banks to heed the U.S. act, and Blom Bank is one of those that has closed accounts belonging to people suspected of links to Hezbollah. The group had no immediate comment on the blast.
The Lebanese Red Cross said two people had suffered minor injuries in the blast, which took place around 8 p.m. in the Verdun area of Beirut, the National News Agency reported.

Local television showed footage of a damaged building, with one hole in a concrete wall, and said shattered glass had fallen to the ground from several storeys up.
The head of Lebanon’s internal security force, Ibrahim Basbous, said the bomb had contained around 15 kg of explosive material and had been placed in a flower bed, the National News Agency said.
Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk said: “Politically it is clear that the target was Blom Bank only.”
He said the attack had nothing to do with the militant group Islamic State, which has mounted suicide bombings in Beirut.
The last bomb attack to hit the Lebanese capital killed more than 40 people in November in the southern suburbs, an area where Hezbollah is dominant. That bombing was claimed by the Sunni Muslim Islamic State.
Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil tweeted that the attack had “targeted the stability of the whole of Lebanon”.
TARGETING HEZBOLLAH’S FINANCES
Heavily-armed, Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which is classified as a terrorist group by the United States, wields enormous political influence in Lebanon and its powerful military wing is playing a major role in backing President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian conflict.
The U.S. Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act (HIFPA), passed in December, threatens to punish any organisation providing significant finance to Hezbollah.
It has ignited a dispute between Hezbollah and a central bank widely seen as a pillar of the otherwise weak and dysfunctional Lebanese state.
The central bank has said the U.S. law must be applied to avoid the international isolation of Lebanon’s banking sector.
Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc issued a statement last week reiterating its criticism of the central bank’s position, saying the U.S. law infringed Lebanon’s national sovereignty.
Hezbollah, whose fighters played a major role in forcing Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon in 2000, enjoys strong support in the Lebanese Shi’ite community. Its members include government ministers, lawmakers and local councillors.
Sunni Muslim politician Saad al-Hariri , a former prime minister and leader of the Future Movement political party, condemned Sunday’s attack at a party event. “Our battle with terrorism, bombings, killings, assassinations and direct and indirect messages is long … Terrorism will not intimidate the Lebanese.”
