Fifa boss ‘sad Africa is out of the World Cup’

Fifa boss Gianni Infantino has told the BBC that he is sad no African team made it to the knock-out stages of the World Cup.

All five African teams – Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia – exited this year’s competition in the group stages.

“The World Cup is for the whole world and the African teams were very, very close at the end.

An Asian [team] made it – an African not – but I think they will be ready soon for the next one.”

With regard to criticism over fair play rulings, the Fifa president said there would be a debrief after the tournament to see if anything could be done better.

After Japan and Senegal finished level on points, goals scored and goal difference, the Africans became the first team to exit a World Cup because of their disciplinary record.

No auction of its kind has ever been done in South Africa. The highest bidder will win the honour of spending the night inside the historic Cell Number 7, where Mandela spent 18 years.”

World Cup: Sad day for Africa

Colombia have beaten Senegal 1-0. That’s the end of Africa’s participation in the World Cup – no team has made it through to the knockout round.

There are huge celebrations from the Colombia players. The Senegal players are distraught. They have been knocked out on fair play rules. It’s the first time in history that has happened at the World Cup.

This is the first time since the 1982 World Cup that all African teams have gone out in the first round.

Salah scores but Egypt lose to Saudis

Mohamed Salah scored his second goal of the World Cup but Egypt ended their campaign pointless with defeat by Saudi Arabia at Volgograd Arena.

The Liverpool forward gave Egypt the lead with a brilliant lob over keeper Yasser Al-Mosailem in the 22nd minute.

Egypt’s Essam El Hadary, 45, became the oldest player to feature at a World Cup and saved Fahad Al Muwallad’s penalty.

However, he could not stop Salman Al Faraj’s spot-kick and was beaten again by Salem Al Dawsari with seconds left.

A fantastic penalty save and two good reaction saves from second-half headers – he might have ended up on the losing side but both he and his country will remember his World Cup debut for years to come

Ighalo says Nigeria’s clash against Argentina will be ‘a war’

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo says Tuesday’s decisive World Cup Group D clash against Argentina in St Petersburg will be “a war”.

Argentina must win to reach the second round while the Super Eagles can qualify with either victory or a draw.

“It’s going to be war (and) a final of finals because they need to win,” Ighalo told BBC Sport.

“They are going to come all out and (use) every tactic that they know to win a game.”

The clash between Argentina and Nigeria will be the fifth World Cup meeting between the sides – with the Super Eagles yet to avoid defeat.

With maximum points in Russia following wins over Nigeria and Argentina, group leaders Croatia have already claimed one of the group’s berths in the Round of 16.

That has left Nigeria, Iceland and Argentina – runners-up at the 2014 World Cup – scrapping for just one place.

Falcao On Target As Colombia Send Poland Crashing

Poland have been dumped out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia following their 2-0 defeat to Colombia at the Kazan Arena on Sunday.

Goals from Yerry Mina, Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado handed Colombia their first win at the tournament.

The Polish team had earlier lost 2-1 to Senegal in their opening group game just as Colombia who also lost 2-1 to Japan.

Poland started out solidly at the back and were aggressive in their play but they cooled off after they failed to sustain the tempo midway through the first half.

Colombia took advantage of their inability to find a cutting-edge, creating chances to score with Curdrado, Falcao and Fernando Quintero all coming close to breaking the deadlock.

Five minutes into the break, Mina gave Colombia the lead, heading in James Rodriguez’s delightful cross past Wojciech Szczesny in goal for Poland.

In the 70th minute, Falcao doubled his side’s lead, latching on to a sublime pass from Quintero to prod home his first goal at the World Cup.

Poland responded to the goal pyshung more men forward and switching to long ball but the were caught out in the 75th minute when James Rodriguez’s long range pass found Curdrado who calmly beat Szczesny.

Poland will face Japan in their final group game while Colombia will battle Senegal. A victory over the Senegalese team will send Colombia to the next round.
