Ebola outbreak: Nigeria imposes airport screenings

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) says it is taking swift action to ensure that Ebola does not enter the country following a fresh outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

NIS spokesperson Sunday James told BBC Yoruba that immigration officials would tighten vigilance at airports and make more use of thermometers to screen passengers:

We are sending a signal to all entry points in the country. The intention is to ensure that any suspected case can be promptly handed over to health officials at the airports.

This is a matter which everybody must be concerned about. All hands must be on deck.”

During the 2014 outbreak in West Africa, more than 11,000 people died – mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Ebola also spread to Nigeria when Patrick Sawyer, who was infected with the virus, flew into the country from Liberia.

Day I begged for money at airport – Anita Joseph

Being a movie star and a celebrity, more often than not, gives you the license to get away with many things, most times. But sometimes coming unstuck is just as inevitable as your next meal. This is a lesson Nollywood diva, curvaceous Anita Joseph had to learn the hard way when she found herself stranded and moneyless at one of the airports not too long ago – no thanks to the ATM and its many hiccups.

“I never believed I would have to ever beg for money in my entire life but it happened to me this unforgettable and embarrassing day at the airport” she told me, looking uncomfortable, like she was reliving the moment all over again. “Jesus, I was so embarrassed. I was at the airport and needed to use the ATM, because I didn’t have a dime on me. But for some reason the ATM didn’t work and I couldn’t withdraw any money.

This is after I had eaten at a restaurant at the airport and needed to pay. I looked around to see if I could spot anyone I know, until my instinct told me I had no choice but to beg. The mere thought of it made me cringe with horror. Me, Nita, to beg? It was inconceivable and unimaginable but it was the only reality staring me in the face or I had to face bigger embarrassment from the restauranteurs,” she recalled coyly.

According to her, holding her breath, she approached a guy and to her utter amazement the response she got left her even more breathless.“ You mean you are an actress and you don’t have any money on you and you depend on ATM. Na Wa for una” the guy barked at her.

“I was almost in tears and my flight was already boarding. I approached another guy and told him the same story and what he said was another shock to my soul. He asked me who I am and said ‘

are you doing this? I told him I am a Nigerian actress but he replied that he doesn’t watch Nigerian films. To my surprise he gave me the money and behold one of my movies was showing at the lounge, she recounted bitterly.

Accidental discharge of bullet injures 2 people at airport

The unknown security, who is reported to be an aide to a Nigerian senator, shot himself and another woman in the foot, while trying to dislodge a magazine from his gun

Two persons were reportedly injured when a gun belonging to a security agent attached to a Nigerian senator accidentally fired shots of bullets.

This happened on Friday, July 8, 2016, at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Sahara Reporters wrote.

According to an eyewitness, the security agent, who was expected to fly with Arik Air, was trying to remove the gun magazine based on aviation regulation when the incident happened.

The gun shots hit him and an unidentified woman on the leg, causing serious injuries.

“It is a standard practice in air travel for anyone with a gun to pull out the bullet”,

“This is what the security man was trying to do but incidentally the gun released the magazine which splattered and hit him and the woman on the leg as he bent down to pull out the magazine from the gun”, the witness said.

This however did not stop them from trekking out of the airport terminal, from which they were taken to the hospital.
