High-level talks on-going in Delta to resolve Clark, MEND, Avengers’ rift

WARRI—THERE are ongoing high-level talks to resolve the differences between the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND and Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, on the one hand, and MEND and the pan-Niger Delta group recently set up in Warri, Delta State, to speak with one voice for the region.

It was learned, yesterday, that there is a consensus among the warring militant groups and leaders to uphold the decision of the monarchs, leaders and stakeholders of the Niger Delta coastal states, that nobody should undermine the decisions taken at the meeting convened by Chief Edwin Clark and others.

The Presidency, international community and traditional rulers from the North and other parts of the country had called Chief Clark to commend him for the initiative, which has practically reduced tension in the region.

MEND, whose intervention other stakeholders misconstrued, also got the wrong impression about the move of the Niger Delta monarchs and leaders, which it wrongly assumed to be a delegation led by Chief Clark.

Vanguard gathered that the Aaron Team 2 Dialogue, Peace and Development Initiative, the interface group of MEND, would meet shortly with Chief Clark to look at the temperamental areas and bury the hatchet.

Secretary of MEND’s Aaron Team 2, Mr Timikpa Okponipere, told Vanguard that the group headed by Odein Ajumogobia, SAN, would meet with Clark soon to iron out issues.

Contacted, Chief Clark confirmed that he was contacted by secretary of Aaron Team 2 and that they would want to visit him in Warri to sort out grey areas.

A Niger Delta leader, who spoke to Vanguard, yesterday, described the move by Aaron Team 2, as a wise initiative, as people were beginning to see the people of the region as unserious and divided.

Spokesperson of the Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta, Sibiri Taiowoh, in a statement, cautioned the Federal Government “to be wary of those using the defunct MEND, which it accused of “seeking political relevance and wanting to free incarcerated Henry and Charles Okah who are dishing out commands from their prison cells.”

The group said that MEND’s proposal would cause more crises in the Niger Delta if government failed to heed its persistent warning.

Also, National Secretary, Urhobo Youth Leaders Association and former youth president general of Udu Kingdom, Delta State, Vincent Oyibode, called on the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, NDGJM, a militant group that rejected appeals by Niger Delta monarchs and leaders in the region to sheathe its sword.

The group, which also kicked against the establishment of a pan-Niger Delta group to speak for the region, actually bombed a pipeline in the state a day before the stakeholders met in Warri.

Oyibode condemned the attack on an oil pipeline in Udu by the Greenland Justice Mandate and appealed to the members to embrace the initiative of the leaders of the region, though he said that the federal and state governments, oil companies, NDDC, DESOPADEC and other development agencies have marginalized the area, Udu youths should give peace a chance.

Also, a pan Niger Delta civil society group has called on President Buhari to embrace the Niger Delta monarchs/leaders’ initiative for peace to reign in the region. The coalition includes the Niger Delta Security Watch Organisation of Nigeria, led Dickson Bekederemo, Ijaw Human Rights Monitors, headed by Mr Fred Brisibe, Ijaw People’s Development Initiative, led by Austin Ozobo and Foundation for Human Rights and Anti-inflammatory Corruption Crusade, shepherded by Alaowei Cleric.

We’ve video, pictures of soldiers engaged in oil bunkering —Avengers

WARRI —Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, yesterday, alleged that soldiers were the merchants of oil bunkering in the Niger Delta and that they have video and pictorial evidence of their involvement in crude oil theft and records, including how much they collect and make per day from illegal oil bunkering.
The group, in a statement denying security reports linking its forces to the killing of troops in Nembe, Bayelsa State, said it was surprised at the desperation of the military to always connect NDA to crimes in Southern Nigeria.

“It is a shame that Operations Delta Safe is still employing the old habit of deliberately dining and wining with fake intelligence from political thugs, political paymasters and enemies of the Niger Delta to perpetuate their continuous funding and relevance by leveraging on the hunger in the land,” spokesperson of the militant group, self-styled Brig Gen Mudoch Agbinibo, said.

The NDA had ceased hostilities, though unannounced, weekend, in deference to the plea by Niger Delta monarchs, leaders and stakeholders to all militant groups in the region to sheathe their swords.

It said, “One question for the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, is, who are the people perpetuating the ongoing illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta at the moment? We have both video and still photographs of the serious involvement of your troops in the pervasive crude oil thefts. We have records of how much profit you collect and make per day from these atrocities in the Niger Delta.

“To set the records straight, we cannot come after your dane guns and ammunition. Since the start of ‘Operation Red Economy,’ our forces have not fired one shot until we have achieved this great success of crippling crude oil productions in the Niger Delta to about 800,000 barrels per day.

“Those gang members paraded as killers of troops of ODS are well known followers of Mr. Africa Ukparasai and Mr Timipre Silva, who were armed by the All Progressives Congress, APC, during the governorship election  in Bayelsa State.

“If your forces and formations come under attack by notorious elements of your own political collaborators and calculations, you should accept it as a friendly fire (from your own dubious creations getting loosed and fighting back to protect their territories and bellies) and enjoy it while it last. Excuse the NDA from your “Pig and Mud squabbles.

“Yesterday was Arepo in Ogun  State, today is Nembe in Bayelsa State, which is the next state you want to involve the NDA in this your bread and butter security conspiracies and collaborations ?”

IYC accuses N-Delta leaders of linking Jonathan with Avengers

Sapele—The umbrella body of Ijaw youths, Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, has condemned what it termed, “the desperation by some politicians of Niger Delta extraction to rope former President Goodluck Jonathan into the formation of the Niger Delta Avengers.”

The group, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Eric Omare, said: “The desperation came to the pinnacle with the media report that intelligence report indicated that Jonathan was one of the persons behind the formation of the NDA.

“The characters behind this desperate plan are politicians of Niger Delta extraction who are in the current government and do not want a peaceful resolution of the renewed militancy in the region.

“They prefer a military option that would result in the killing of innocent Niger Deltans. These frivolous accusations against former President Jonathan started after he visited President Buhari few weeks ago.

“Secondly, they don’t also want Jonathan’s intervention to resolve the crisis for obvious political reasons. So, this is the reason why they have orchestrated all sorts of lies to drag Jonathan into the formation of NDA. It is deliberate and we are sure the top hierarchy of government knows this fact,” he said, advising the former President to explore legal options to bring the allegation to a halt.

Abubakar urges Avengers, IPOB, MASSOB to see project Nigeria as a baby learning how to grow

ONITSHA —The former Nigerian head of state, General Abdulsalam Abubakar has appealed to the agitating sections of the country to embrace dialogue as the veritable instrument to sustainable growth of the economy.

He urged members of the Niger-Delta Avengers, NDA; the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, to see project Nigeria as a baby learning how to grow which would take a process of development.

The former head of state stated this in Nnewi, Anambra state, while commissioning The Nnewi Hotel and Events Center built by his friend, Ben Aghazu. He noted that the collective responsibility of every Nigerian would ensure sustainable growth for the economy.

Also speaking on the issue, the former governor of old Kaduna state in the second republic, Abubakar Balarabe Musa and a civil activist, said the issue of restructuring Nigeria being suggested by many Nigerians as the solution of the country’s multi-faceted problem should be holistic; where leaders would lead by example and followers too would replicate same.

He called for cross fertilization of ideas across the region to resuscitate the nation’s dwelling economy.

The former head of state who went on facility tours of the Chikason Group manufacturing owned by Dr Chika Okafor, Ibeto Group, manufacturer of battery, plastics and cement praised the manufacturers for their immense contribution to the development of the country.

The chairman of the Chikason Group, Chika Okafor thanked Abubakar for his visit to the company and appealed to the federal government to assist the manufacturers to enable them contribute more to the economy of the country.

Wike’s not sponsor of Avengers- Rivers govt

Rivers State Government has denied an online report that the governor, Mr Nyesom Wike, is a sponsor of Niger Delta militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, NDA.

Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, in a statement, yesterday, said: “Our attention has been drawn to yet another false media propaganda being circulated by the paid official false agents of All Progressives Congress, APC, wherein they claimed that Rivers State governor, Mr Wike, is one of the sponsors of the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers.

“We unequivocally deny this false report fabricated by the online medium, with the aim of diverting attention from Governor Wike’s superlative performance.

“Any close observer of the APC propaganda machine, where this particular online medium play an ignoble role, would have noticed that all they do is concoct lies about Rivers State. We urge all well meaning persons to disregard this current falsehood credited to a faceless splinter group of NDA.

“This falsehood may not be unconnected with Governor  Wike’s speech at the just concluded conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, where he publicly declared that he and other stakeholders in the state have prevented militant groups from sabotaging oil installations as is the case elsewhere. Not happy with this declaration, this particular online medium resolved to concoct another ill-conceived  report to mislead the public.

“Nigerians already know this online medium and what they represent. They represent retrogression, deliberate falsehood,  under-development and biased unprofessional journalism. Governor Wike is a patriotic leader, committed to the sustenance  and improvement of the nation’s democracy and economy. He is a promoter of security and good governance. He cannot be disparaged by concocted publications from APC media agents.”

Militants vs Buhari! No crack in our group –Avengers

THE Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, this morning, responded to a reported split of the group, saying it was untrue. The militant group in a retort at 8.21 am to Vanguard inquiry, said: “The NDA is too busy at the moment to be distracted by people like Jude Kekyll, he is not part of us and cannot be part of us. All our operatives are united and we are all together.”

A group, Reformed Niger Delta Avengers, RNDA, broke out of the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, on Friday, and threatened to expose the identities of NDA fighters and their sponsors if the militant group does not stop bombing of pipelines.

The breakaway faction in a statement by Cynthia Whyte, said it dumped the NDA because of the recent personal appeal of former President Goodluck Jonathan, peace efforts of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, guilt feelings over the damage wrecked on the environment and President Muhammadu Buhari’s demonstrated political will to clean up the environment.

“We have decided to join the MEND Aaron Team 2 peace initiative through the clearing house of Niger Delta Dialogue and Contact Group (NDDCG) headed by HRH King Alfred Diette-Spiff,” the group said.

It asserted: “We will also cooperate with the government by exposing the identities of our comrades, who remain stubborn in their insistence to continue attacks. For example, it will shock the nation to know the Jekyll and Hyde personality behind the pseudonym ‘Brigadier General Murdoch Agbinibo’ and our sponsors.”

NDA should table conditions for dialogue

Meanwhile, the Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPDI, yesterday, urged NDA to come out with its preliminary conditions for dialogue just as it condemned the threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, to join forces with government to deal with the militant group.

IPDI in a statement by the national president, Austin Ozobo, said: “Our attention has been drawn to the preliminary conditions for dialogue and purported threat to smoke out Niger Delta Avengers ,NDA, by the defunct Movement For the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, if NDA fails to embrace the proposed dialogue with federal government.”

“Our preliminary study of the above shows that MEND preliminary conditions and threat to join government to smoke out NDA if they fail to embrace dialogue falls below expectation.

“It is a plot to rob the region of their genuine struggle as they failed to draw all inclusive preliminary demands such as immediate commencement of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, reopening of NIMASA Technical College, Okoloba, Delta state and acceptance to conduct referendum.

“It did also include release of alleged NDA members, including Oporoza 10 youths, agreement not to harass and arrest members of NDA if they come out, seizure of further military operations and arrests pending the final resolution of the dialogue, agreement to revoke oil blocs and greement to implement Niger Delta Development blue print ,” it said.

IPDI asserted: “Though, we are not against the release of Henry Okah, Charles Okah, Edmund Ebiware, and others but since they were not arrested in active struggle, it is wrong to have use their release as a preliminary conditions to begin dialogue of Niger Delta demands of resource control and self-determination.”

“If MEND is not fighting for its affairs, why did it fail to include revitalization of seaports in Niger Delta and relocation of headquarters of oil companies to the region?

“It is also wrong for MEND to threaten to join force with Nigeria military to fish or smoke out Niger Delta Avengers if they fail to yield to its line of dialogue. This exposes the shallow interest of miscreants under the banner of defunct MEND,” it added.

“This further shows that they are mostly interested on the release of their members, who are currently undergoing detention. MEND definition of the current struggle is an attempt to undermine the evergreen struggle for better Niger Delta region. It is an attempt to hijack the efforts of NDA to free their members arrested on issues not connected with the struggle.

“Why MEND decided to condemn NDA to the firing squad and exonerate their members who were arrested and detained on account of their personal deals and why it feels that they are better than NDA members beat imagination. How did MEND expect genuine people and NDA to queue behind their self-centered preliminary conditions for dialogue when such preliminary demands do not guarantee the future of the region? The group stated.

It added: “MEND should review its preliminary conditions for the proposed dialogue, one thing MEND should understand is that government may decide to accept their shallow and selfish preliminary conditions, but what would they do if government fails to agree on the real demands of the region on the course of the dialogue.” “MEND is doing another injustice to the region. You do not just make demands, you must consult resources persons, you must consider tomorrow when making preliminary demands. MEND preliminary conditions fall short of expectation and it does not represent the general interest of Niger Delta people,” IPDI said.

Former Niger Delta militants urge Avengers to join in government talks

The government has moved in army reinforcements to the southern swamps but Western allies such as Britain have said widespread poverty and oil spills in the Niger Delta need to be addressed to stop the militants.

A group of former militants have urged the Niger Delta Avengers, who have claimed responsibility for a recent string of attacks on oil and gas facilities, to join in discussions with the government, a statement said on Sunday.
Last week, the Avengers said they would not cooperate with a government initiative to start talks with them and other militants over their demands for a greater share of oil wealth and pollution in the impoverished southern swamp area.
The attacks have cut Nigeria’s oil output to a 20-year low.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said: “If indeed your cause is to avenge the injustice done to the Niger Delta region then, we urge you to ceasefire and join us to the table of negotiation with the federal Government. ”
MEND, one of largest militant groups until it signed up for a government amnesty in 2009, said in a statement it had nominated a team of negotiators on its own behalf.
“Following useful exploratory discussions held with high ranking officials of the current administration… MEND has constituted (a team) to dialogue with the federal Government on the immediate, medium and long-term future of the Niger Delta region,” it said.
MEND has said some of its former commanders and fighters make up the Avengers, claims denied by the group. Security officials have also linked a MEND commander to the Avengers, though he denies this.
The government has moved in army reinforcements to the southern swamps but Western allies such as Britain have said widespread poverty and oil spills in the Niger Delta need to be addressed to stop the militants.
