Zambia ex-VP avoids jail thanks to church

Former Zambian Vice-President Nevers Mumba has avoided prison after pleading that as a pastor, his congregation would suffer if he went to jail.

The cleric and politician was convicted on two counts of abuse of the authority of office by the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The charges relate to his time when he served as Zambia’s ambassador to Canada between 2009 and 2011.

He was found guilty of awarding a contract to a Canadian company to do electrical works at the official residence of the high commissioner.

He was also found guilty of not following the correct procedure in the awarding of another contract for electrical and carpeting work, as well as the construction of a desk at the same residence.

After his guilty verdict was announced, Mumba pleaded in mitigation that his church members could not do without him.

The magistrate accepted this and Mumba, who served as vice-president between 2003 and 2004, will not serve any sentence as he was granted an absolute discharge.

Mumba is still involved in politics, and is now a faction leader of the former ruling party, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD).

Escaped Ebola patients ‘taken to church’

More details have emerged about the Ebola patients removed from isolation earlier this week.

The BBC’s Anne Soy, who has been in the Democratic Republic of Congo reporting on the outbreak, says the three people were removed from a treatment centre in the city of Mbandaka by their families on Monday evening.

The World Health Organization’s emergency communications officer Eugene Kabambi told the BBC the relatives demanded to take them to church for prayers.

The three were then whisked away on motorbikes, sparking an immediate police hunt.

Two of the patients later died and the third one has now returned to the isolation unit ran by the medical charity MSF.

The families of the three patients are being monitored and some of them have been vaccinated against the disease.

This incident presents a new challenge for health workers trying to stop the spread of the deadly disease.

So far, 27 people are believed to have died of Ebola, with at least 58 cases reported.

China bans Christians from all Church Activities (See Why)

Authorities across several counties China’s central Henan province issued a warning on March 8, forbidding any Christian gatherings in the area and placing Christians under house arrest. Additionally, officials continue to tear down couplet door decorations that use Christian language.
According to an anonymous source in Shangqiu, Henan, Christians there have been placed under house arrest without charge, with police officers watching their residence and requiring them to report where they are going every time they wish to leave the house.

“I heard that many churches in Sheqi County also received a notice that believers cannot gather anymore,” a Christian in Nanyang, Henan said. “Christians are afraid of gathering and they don’t have anywhere to gather either. Times have changed. It feels like the Cultural Revolution.”

The Cultural Revolution refers to the period between 1966 and 1976, when Mao Zedong attempted to destroy all influences besides Communism in China, and was a period of great economic and societal hardship, especially for citizens who practiced religion. Atheism began to be enforced as the official religious belief of the Communist Party.

A Christian named Wang spoke with a reporter on March 9, explaining that the day previous, a notice had gone out to all churches in the cities of Zhumadian and Zhoukou, as well as Gushi County, announcing that all religious activities in the area are cancelled until further notice. Though the warning stipulates that any who refuse to comply will be punished, the nature of that punishment is unclear.

In Tanghe County, authorities forcibly disbanded house church meetings and ordered all participants to register with a government operated Three-Self Church instead. Christians were warned that any who continued to meet would be fined 30,000 yuan (U.S. $4,700).

During the celebration of Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, which can last several weeks in China, authorities inspected Christian households and removed any decorations which referenced religion. Couplets, which are banners with paired poetic phrases hung on both sides of the door to a house, are very common decorations for the Spring Festival. However, officials tore down all couplets which used the term “Emmanuel” and replaced them with couplets wishing for “good fortune and wealth” instead.

ChinaAid reports on instances of religious persecution, such as the outbreak of events across Henan province, in order to expose abuses by the Chinese government and promote human rights and rule of law in China.

Chinese Authorities blow up Christian Mega church “golden lampstand church” with dynamite

From prosecuting Christians and throwing those who openly read the bible or preach on the streets inside jail and now blowing up Christian worship centers with dynamite, one would wonder, why does Chinese Government hate Christianity so much.

Reports suggests that Chinese authorities have demolished a well-known Christian megachurch, inflaming long-standing tensions between religious groups and the Communist Party. Witnesses and overseas activists said the paramilitary People’s Armed Police used dynamite and excavators to destroy the Golden Lampstand Church, which has a congregation of more than 50,000, in the city of Linfen in Shaanxi province.

ChinaAid, a US-based Christian advocacy group, said local authorities planted explosives in an underground worship hall to demolish the building following, constructed with nearly $2.6m (£1.9m) in contributions from local worshippers in one of China’s poorest regions.

The church had faced “repeated persecution” by the Chinese government, said ChinaAid. Hundreds of police and hired thugs smashed the building and seized Bibles in an earlier crackdown in 2009 that ended with the arrest of church leaders.

Those church leaders were given prison sentences of up to seven years for charges of illegally occupying farmland and disturbing traffic order, according to state media. There are an estimated 60 million Christians in China, many of whom worship in independent congregations like the Golden Lampstand. Millions of Christians, Buddhists and Muslims also worship in state-sanctioned assemblies.

But the surging popularity of non-state-approved churches has raised the ire of authorities, wary of any threats to the officially atheist Communist Party’s rigid political and social control.

In Niger, Muslim youths attack Catholic Church

A group of Muslim youths have attacked a Catholic Church around the Zuma Rock area of Niger state on Friday, July 15, 2016.

Members of St. Philip’s Catholic Parish, Baki Iku, went to pray in the Church and the angry Muslims came to disrupt their prayers saying they were not supposed to pray on Friday.

They said Friday is their day of prayer, adding that Christians should stick to praying on Sunday alone.

The youths allegedly destroyed properties and furniture in the Church before some soldiers came to the rescue of the Church members.

Vanguard reports that the Vicar-General of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Luka Sylvester Gopep, said “Sometime around 2pm, some Muslim youths in their hundreds left their mosque after their Friday Jumat prayer and rushed to the church premises, climbed the wall and destroyed everything in the church: the windows, the altar, musical instruments, the chapel.

“The security man in the church premises was beaten to pulp.

“Some women who were holding a prayer meeting were chased away. “The seminarian who is resident in the premises was also beaten up and chased away.”

Francis Emmanuel, a 41-year-old carpenter, was stabbed by a group of Muslim youths in Kaduna state » for eating during the Ramadan fast.
