I won’t share my personal info on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg reveals

Of the hundreds of questions thrown at Mark Zuckerberg by US lawmakers Tuesday, none appeared to perplex the Facebook founder more than Senator Dick Durbin’s pointed query about where he slept the previous evening.

“Would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night?” Durbin asked during an intense and closely-watched hearing about online digital privacy, and Facebook’s role in what happens to personal information once users join the platform.

Zuckerberg paused for a full eight seconds, chuckled, grimaced, and ultimately demurred.

“Um, uh, no,” he said.

And “if you’ve messaged anybody this week would you share with us the names of the people you’ve messaged?” the Illinois Democrat persisted.

Again, a similar unwillingness to answer.

Perhaps more than any other senator during five hours of questioning, Durbin’s everyman tactic put a finger on the crux of the issue surrounding Facebook’s failure to maintain control of the private information of tens of millions of users, amid a scandal over the gathering of personal data used to target political advertising and messaging during the 2016 presidential race.

“I think that might be what this is all about,” said Durbin, 40 years Zuckerberg’s senior.

“Your right to privacy, the limits of your right to privacy, and how much you give away in modern America in the name of connecting people around the world.”

Zuckerberg, who at 33 runs a multi-billion-dollar company with some two billion users, accepted personal responsibility for the leak of users’ data and vowed that the company will do better in guarding such information.

He also conceded Durbin’s point was a fair one. “I think everyone should have control over how their information is used,” Zuckerberg said.

It’s been an expensive two months for the 500 wealthiest people on the planet.
Their combined net worth fell $181 billion this week as the S&P 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered their steepest weekly drop in more than two years amid heated rhetoric over tariffs and retaliation. The group’s wealth has shrunk $436 billion since markets peaked on Jan. 26.

Mark Zuckerberg bore the brunt this week with $10.3 billion wiped from his fortune on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He dropped three places to seventh on the ranking as scandal unfolded at Facebook Inc. The social network’s shares tumbled 14 percent following reports that it let Cambridge Analytica amass data on 50 million users.

Wretched Week

The five biggest billionaire fallers ended the week $34 billion poorer.

One-week loss

  • Larry Page $-4.6B
  • Jeff Bezos -6.1B
  • Warren Buffet -6.2B
  • Larry Ellison -6.9B
  • Mark Zuckerberg -10.3B.

The downdraft also caught Larry Ellison, down $7 billion as Oracle Corp. forecast slowing sales growth for cloud-related products. Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s Warren Buffett, Amazon.com Inc.’s Jeff Bezos and Alphabet Inc.’s Larry Page lost $17 billion combined.

The world’s 500 biggest fortunes now encompass $5.2 trillion, according to the index.

Popular musician, Akon, to run for American presidency, Picks Zuckerberg As VP

American-Senegalese singer, Aliaume Thiam, popularly known as Akon, has spoken about debating with President Donald Trump and lecturing him on governance.
In a new interview with journalists which held at Los Angeles yesterday, the 44-year-old singer also dropped a hint on running for the 2020 US Presidential run.

He also said Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, will be his running mate if he was to run for Presidency.

“If I was to run for President I would actually ask [Mark Zuckerberg] to be my running man.

“Because I think sometimes it takes people from the outside to really see life differently, to make differences,” he says in the video below.

He added that Trump has been making a “huge difference” but not in a positive way.

“I think Trump would have been a great president if he made decisions for the people.

“If he was as passionate as he is for his own interests as he is for the people, oh he would have made an amazing president,” he said.

50th hackathon built by Mark Zuckerberg engineers across the world — in London, Tel Aviv, California.

Today I got to see prototypes from our 50th hackathon built by our engineers across the world — in London, Tel Aviv, California and more.

One engineer built a camera that uses AI so you can control it with your voice. Another engineer built a tool for controlling your desktop in virtual reality. A third team built an AI chat bot that new engineers here can ask questions about our company. The team below used AI to recognize people in videos to make sure you always see videos with the people you care about.

Hackathons are one of the ways we come up with new ideas at Facebook. I always love seeing what our engineers create, and I’m looking forward to seeing these ideas added to our services.

Mark Zuckerberg on the Favorite Friends Day with Raman and Priya Gulati!

One of my favorite Friends Day moments this year was meeting Raman and Priya Gulati, and their baby girl Sohana.

Raman and Priya first met on Facebook in 2011, got engaged the next year and married in 2013. Last November, they welcomed baby Sohana. She is a beautiful and living example of the power of connection.

Thank you Raman and Priya for sharing your story with us!
