Nigeria’s football kit up for design award

London’s Design Museum has 87 nominees for its Beazley Designs of the Year – and included in the fashion category is Nigeria’s World Cup football kit.

The Super Eagles went out in the group stages of the tournament in Russia – but their outfits definitely won the fashion stakes.

The home and away shirts sold out on the Nike website soon after they were released – and there were long queues at the beginning of June in London with fans anxious to get their hands on the shirts

Breach of agreement: Opabunmi set to sue French club

Former Super Eagles forward, Femi Opabunmi, is planning to sue his former club in France, Niort, over their failure to honour their side of the alleged agreement they had with him before he left the club in 2006.

Opabunmi, who at 16 became the third youngest player to appear at the World Cup (Korea/Japan 2002) after Northern Ireland’s Norman Whiteside (17 years and 41 days at Espana ‘82) and Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o (17 years and three months at France ’98), ended his football career in 2006 after he started experiencing vision problems in one of his eyes.

Our correspondent learnt that the former Shooting Stars player, who represented Nigeria at the Trinidad and Tobago 2001 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, is not happy that Niort, who are currently campaigning in the France’s second tier league, have refused to assist him.

Opabunmi, who confirmed the development, condemned Les chamois for allegedly abandoning him as he sought medical treatment for his vision problems.

The 33-year-old former Switzerland and Israel-based player said, “Things have been hard for me and I must thank the Nigeria Football Federation president, Amaju Pinnick, and the vice-president, Seyi Akinwunmi, who have been supporting me.

“My former club, Niort, played on my intelligence, innocence and youthfulness. We had an agreement when I left the club to seek treatment for my eye problems but they reneged on the agreement.

“It has been a long time and I have decided to seek justice in court. I am working on that now. The club should do what is right concerning the agreement. My health conditions ended my career, and it is not my wish. I am sad about it but life must go on.”

He said the NFF had been making attempts to rehabilitate him, stressing that he had also received help from friends like former Nigeria attacker Osaze Odemwingie.

“Osaze has been a good friend who has always been there for me. I appreciate what he has been doing for me.

“My family is here in Nigeria with me but I have a child in France from a French woman. I call on young players of today to invest their time and money wisely because nobody knows tomorrow.

“They should learn from my predicament. I put in a lot as a young man but it ended the way I did not envisage.”

Egypt 1-0 Nigeria (Super Eagles say goodbye to AFCON 2017)

The Super Eagles are now doomed in their aspirations to qualify for next year’s AFCON tournament in Gabon after losing 0-1 to Egypt in Alexandria tonight. The task before the Eagles became tougher after Friday’s 1-1 draw with Egypt in Kaduna and the withdrawal of Chad from the AFCON race.

Nigeria missed out on the 2015 edition in Equatorial Guinea and were desperate for a return. The first half ended goalless with the Super Eagles keeping to coach Samson Siasia’s tactical master plan to keep proceedings neat and tidy and then attack the Egyptians on the counter.

But with the Egyptians resolute they soon found a way past the Nigerians in the second half.

19 year old Ramadan Sobhy scored in the 65th minute after a deflection off his shot ensured the Super Eagles left the field with hands in their mouth. Upon scoring Nigeria, the Egyptians introduced a striker with the hope that they could pull the Nigerian defence across the lines knowing fully well the Nigerians will attack, attack and attack as they needed a goal badly.

Ighalo, ineffective throughout the match, drifted towards the left side as new entrant Alex Iwobi and Ahmed Musa tried to play centrally. Time and time again, Nigeria were thwarted by the Egyptian defence causing the Nigerian backline to play high up and expose themselves in 3 vs 4 or 3 vs 5 situations.

And then the moment of hope came! Victor Moses, hardworking through out the night blazed a rocketing shot from almost 30 yards which hit the bar and spiraled towards the other corner. Victor Moses and the Super Eagles bench were distraught, how wasn’t that a goal? Even with four minutes of extra time, the Super Eagles looked more likely conceding a goal than scoring one.

Nigeria with 2 points from three games, with just one game against Tanzania remaining, is effectively out of qualification for next year’s AFCON tournament.
